CV writing -

Should I use AI to help me write my CV?

Answer: Yes AND No!

Should I use AI to help me write my CV?

YES:-

Here's where AI and Generative AI can help with a CV:

• Help with summarising wordy paragraphs

• Help matching CV to a role

• Help bring out relevant parts of your background

NO:-

Here's where you should NOT use AI within your CV:

"Using AI to build you an entire CV, that is like asking AI to show up and take your driving test for you!"

‣ Your CV needs to be AUTHENTIC

‣ Your CV needs to be CONGRUENT

‣ Your CV needs to reflect YOU, your way of expressing yourself and your creativity

‣ So yes, a CV written by AI might get you a first interview,

but WILL IT GET YOU THE JOB?

When writing a CV, you need to think about ALL the stages of an interview process, not simply the first screen.

The art and the science of interviewing

So these days, more and more ambitious individuals are enlisting the help of AI to help them build a CV.

That's great - the world needs workers who are adept with AI, in particular those who can write great prompts

However, here is the big question.

Recruiters are now (at least in theory) being flooded with CVs that are theoretically perfect for the role.

But what happens at that very first interview?

The wheat gets sorted from the chaff.

"Nowadays, it is the screening interview stage that will knock out 99% of those so-called 'ideal' applicants!
Whereas in the pre-Generative AI world, it was at the CV application stage that 99% of applicants got knocked out."

KEY TAKEAWAY:

Job Seekers would be well served in undertaking some  robust interview training and learning how to shine at interview.

Making sense of today's job market - The Career Engine

Last month, I met a senior individual, Sam, who was  really struggling with his next career step.

He didn't know how to approach his next career move and was drawing blanks.

He had recently moved continents to accommodate his wife's career and was looking for a new career opportunity in a brand new geography.

He didn't know where to start.

He'd been applying to jobs via linkedin, but on the rare occasion he received any feedback, he was told that he had "too much experience" and was "too senior" for any of the roles he liked.

So we sat down together for an online coffee and gently unravelled all the pieces.

Here's what we looked at:

• His 'dream' role vs the career opportunities in the particular geography he had moved to

• Narrowing down his linkedin profile to make it appeal to the 'right' hiring managers

• Discarding skills and experience which would add "noise" but not value to his profile, in order to make it more targeted

• Highlighting areas of his career that he had particularly enjoyed

• Upregulating experience which would be valuable in that particular geography

Once we had finished, Sam was more focussed and more encouraged because he could see a clear path forward.   He could see how his profile would now "speak" to the RELEVANT hiring managers.

Exactly 8 days later, he messaged to say he'd been invited to interview for a job which he loved the look of!

So then our next step was Interview Coaching, but that is a different story, for a different day :)

"It is so rewarding as a Career Coach building a relationship with a client and seeing them flourish and succeed.    This is my passion - I love helping people shine"
