Making sense of today's job market - The Career Engine
Last month, I met a senior individual, Sam, who was really struggling with his next career step.
He didn't know how to approach his next career move and was drawing blanks.
He had recently moved continents to accommodate his wife's career and was looking for a new career opportunity in a brand new geography.
He didn't know where to start.
He'd been applying to jobs via linkedin, but on the rare occasion he received any feedback, he was told that he had "too much experience" and was "too senior" for any of the roles he liked.
So we sat down together for an online coffee and gently unravelled all the pieces.
Here's what we looked at:
• His 'dream' role vs the career opportunities in the particular geography he had moved to
• Narrowing down his linkedin profile to make it appeal to the 'right' hiring managers
• Discarding skills and experience which would add "noise" but not value to his profile, in order to make it more targeted
• Highlighting areas of his career that he had particularly enjoyed
• Upregulating experience which would be valuable in that particular geography
Once we had finished, Sam was more focussed and more encouraged because he could see a clear path forward. He could see how his profile would now "speak" to the RELEVANT hiring managers.
Exactly 8 days later, he messaged to say he'd been invited to interview for a job which he loved the look of!
So then our next step was Interview Coaching, but that is a different story, for a different day :)
